According to the article, for $30 a month a website called PimEyes will search through the Internet to find pictures containing given faces.
I uploaded a selfie of me and let it go search around to see what it could find. And it did successfully find pictures of me from the limited places that I know they are out there. It also threw in a couple of random people who I didn’t think looked like me at all!
The website says
We believe that you have the right to find yourself on the Internet and protect your privacy and image. Using the latest technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning, we help you find your pictures on the Internet and defend yourself from scammers, identity thieves, or people who use your image illegally.

And absolutely there is a use case or two there. But there are also other use cases that might be more concerning, and the NY Times article has some examples.
